Eating Healthy

It seems it is getting harder and harder to eat healthy. As humans learn more about what makes up food and as we make more genetically altered food I find that being able to understand how food affects you becomes impossible. There are some people that believe in all organic foods, others in being a vegetarian but there are people that contradict these beliefs. I think the best solution is just to take things in smaller portions, there is no need to eat a gigantic slab of steak in one sitting.

The big key in keeping a healthy weight is keeping active. We lead a terribly sedentary lifestyle for the most part and so our non-exercise activity is much lower than that of our ancestors. As far as food goes the big sin is eating too much refined foods. Why do we do this? We do it because refined foods last longer and cost less. By refined foods I mean pretty much everything on the “inner aisles” of the grocery store. We really need to be getting out food from the produce, meat and dairy sections and certain things from the bakery. Make sure to balance these selections according to a proper balance of carbs/fat/protien. Another big sin these days is portion size. Rule of thumb is that a serving is the size of your fist and your fist is not that big. Your meat should be like a 4oz portion or less. A portion of fruit, for many fruits like the apple, is 1/2 of the item. One way to fix this is to measure everything, our eyes lie but the scale doesn’t. Once you are measuring your food the next step is to write it all down. Journalling food is super simple and SUPER effective.
